You've invested in beautiful framed digital prints, adding personality and style to your home. Now, how do you ensure they remain as vibrant and captivating as the day you first hung them? Good news! Caring for your framed digital prints is surprisingly straightforward. With a few simple practices, you can protect your investment and keep your art looking pristine for years to come.
Location, Location, Location is Key
The first and most important step in maintaining your prints is strategic placement.
Avoid Direct Sunlight: Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight is the biggest enemy of any artwork, especially prints. UV rays can cause colors to fade and paper to yellow over time. Position your prints on walls that don't receive harsh, direct sunlight throughout the day.
Steer Clear of High Humidity: Bathrooms, steamy kitchens, or basements with high moisture levels aren't ideal spots. Humidity can cause the print to warp or ripple, and in extreme cases, lead to mold or mildew under the glass.
Maintain Stable Temperatures: Rapid fluctuations in temperature can also be detrimental. Try to hang your prints in areas with consistent, moderate room temperatures.
Gentle Cleaning for Lasting Vibrancy
A little dusting goes a long way in keeping your framed prints looking their best.
For the Frame: Use a soft, dry, lint-free cloth (like a microfiber cloth) to gently wipe down the frame. If you need to remove smudges from a non-wood frame, a slightly damp cloth with plain water can work, but immediately dry it afterward. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners, as they can damage the frame's finish.
For the Glass/Acrylic: The glass or acrylic front of your framed print can attract dust and fingerprints. Use a clean, soft microfiber cloth. For smudges, you can lightly spray a small amount of ammonia-free glass cleaner onto the cloth (never directly onto the frame or print) and then wipe the surface. If your print has an acrylic front, be extra careful, as acrylic can scratch more easily than glass. Always use a cleaner specifically designed for acrylic if needed.
Avoid the Print Itself: Never attempt to clean the print itself, especially if it's matted. Dust on the print or mat should ideally be removed with a very soft, clean, dry brush or a can of compressed air held at a distance. Touching the print directly can leave oils or damage the surface.
Handle with Care
When moving or adjusting your framed prints, a bit of caution prevents accidental damage.
Hold by the Frame: Always hold the print by the frame, not by the glass or the hanging wire.
Protect the Corners: The corners of frames and prints are vulnerable to dings. Be mindful when carrying them through doorways or around furniture.
Secure Hanging: Ensure your prints are hung securely on appropriate wall anchors or hooks to prevent accidental falls.
